Why warranties matter?

Do you use professional weighing scales? If you do, you’ll know how important it is that they provide a weight reading you can trust.

Not only that, but it’s imperative that the scales you use don’t let you down when you least expect it, leaving you to have to order new scales, and wait for their delivery.

You, like many other companies, may depend on professional weighing scales for your business to function.

So: when you’re buying weighing scales, what factors should you consider to ensure what you do order is reliable, and trustworthy?

Weighing scale warranties

What does a warranty say about a weighing scale? Right Weigh Scale supplies Adam Equipment weighing scales and balances, which have warranties of up to five years. In fact, most of the Adam range is covered by a 5-year warranty.

A long warranty on professional weighing scales shows that the manufacturer trusts their product to last a long time. After all, there’s no point in giving a product a long warranty when it’s likely to break down within weeks or months.

Adam Equipment’s warranties reflect the brand’s belief in their products, and according to their team, extending the length of their warranties back in 2023 was a conscious effort to make this clear to the user.

So, you’ll find rugged industrial scales, sub-milligram analytical balances and everything in-between now available with a 5-year warranty when you order an Adam Equipment product from Right Weigh Scale.

Peace of mind for years to come

A warranty does not guarantee that a weighing scale or balance will not break down at some point. Instead, what it does is tell you that the manufacturer expects the product to last as long as the warranty period as an absolute minimum.

So what does that mean for you, the user? A long warranty means that, should the worst happen, you won’t need to foot the bill for a replacement (as long as the issue is covered by the warranty, of course).

Kinder to the environment

A long warranty suggesting a longer life for a scale means, of course, that the planet benefits. Investing in professional weighing scales or balances from a manufacturer that provides a long warranty means you’ll spend less time relaxing old scales with new. Therefore, there are fewer old scales going to landfill and fewer new scales being manufactured.

Less downtime for your business

How much does your business rely on weighing scales? And how long would you have to wait if one scale stopped working and you had to order another?

Less time spent waiting for one failed scale to be replaced by a new one means less downtime for your business. That, potentially, means less money lost to this downtime.

Plus… Think about brand reputation

When you need to buy professional weighing scales, warranty cover should be a big consideration. Compare warranties between brands – but also, compare company reputation.

If you’re considering buying a reliable scale or balance from Right Weigh Scale, ask about the brands we sell, who uses them, and how often customers return to the same brand.

Check out the brand’s social channels, see what they post about, and also look for reviews online for their products. This will give you a great 360-degree view of the kind of brand they are, and the quality of the products they sell.

Buy the scale that fits your application

Finally… It has to be said that how fit for the job a scale or balance is will make a huge difference to its dependability.

For example, for washdown environments, make sure the scale is IP-certified. If you need a food scale, look both for washdown credentials and NSF compliance. If you need a heavy duty scale for weighing pallets, ensure the capacity of the scale is high enough and it features tough construction – such as mild steel reinforced construction, heavy duty leveling feet, and maybe overload protection, just in case.

Need help with choosing professional weighing scales?

If you need help with choosing weighing scales or balances, and a key consideration how reliable they are likely to be, speak to Right Weigh Scale. We’re more than happy to provide advice on any of the scale brands we supply, and help you find the right weighing scale for your application… And a scale that will last, too!

While many people use “scale” and “balance” interchangeably, understanding the differences between the two can influence your purchasing decision. In this blog, we’ll explore the distinctions between scales and balances and help you determine which one best suits your needs.

What is a Weighing Scale?

A weighing scale is a device that measures weight by detecting deflection. Mechanical scales, which don’t require electricity, use springs that stretch under weight.

The radial dial on these scales shows the amount of force needed to stretch the spring, which is then converted into pounds or kilograms. While you might still find spring scales in home bathroom or kitchen settings, they are considered outdated for professional use. Today, digital scales with load cells have become the standard in the market.

Load cells are transducers that convert the force or weight applied to them into an electrical signal. Typically made from aluminum or stainless steel, a load cell has an electrical current running through it. These metals are slightly flexible, causing the load cell to bend under weight. The amount of bending is detected by the electrical current, which is then translated into a readable value on the digital display.

Unlike spring scales, which measure deflection in a similar way, digital scales with load cells offer greater durability and accuracy. For example, our digital IHS 20a crane scale can handle weights up to 10,000 kg—something a spring scale would need to be extremely large to manage and could be dangerous if the spring failed. In contrast, the IHS 20a remains compact while providing precise measurements.

What’s a Balance?

Balances have a much longer history than scales—dating back several thousand years. In this blog, we explore the evolution of laboratory balances over time. Unlike scales, which measure deflection, balances determine unknown weights by comparing them against known weights.

A contemporary example of a mechanical balance is our TBB Triple Beam. Each beam on the TBB has adjustable weights that, when positioned correctly along the beam, achieve equilibrium with the weight placed on the pan. By adding the necessary weights to reach this balance, you obtain the measurement. The TBB is particularly useful in classrooms, offering a hands-on demonstration of the weighing process.

For professional applications, digital balances are the most commonly used. These balances perform the weighing process internally through a force restoration mechanism. This mechanism utilizes coils within a magnetic field to generate the precise force needed to balance the object. The amount of force required is then displayed as the final weight measurement.

Should You Opt for a Scale or a Balance?

Ultimately, choosing the right weighing machine depends on your specific needs for capacity and precision. Here’s a comparison of how scales and balances measure up in these areas:

Capacity

Most weighing machines with capacities exceeding a few kilograms are scales rather than balances. Examples include bench, floor, platform, and hanging scales, all designed to handle substantial weights.

Load cells are known for their durability, and, as demonstrated by our PT Platform Scales, some models feature multiple load cells. The PT Platform Scale, for instance, is equipped with four load cells—one in each corner. This configuration ensures accurate weight readings regardless of the item’s placement on the platform, allowing the PT to handle capacities ranging from 1,000kg to 10,000kg.

In contrast, semi-micro, analytical, and precision balances are designed for much lower capacities. Their force restoration mechanisms need to generate a precise amount of force to counterbalance the weight of the object, which is manageable when dealing with weights of just a few kilograms or less. For example, our Equinox EAB 125i Semi-Micro Balance has a maximum capacity of 62g, reflecting its specialized purpose.

Therefore, if you require a weighing machine with a high capacity, you’ll most likely be looking at scales rather than balances, and the opposite holds true for lower capacities.

Precision

Balances offer greater precision and accuracy than scales, with much finer readability. For example, the EAB 225i, despite its 62g capacity, can deliver results with a precision of 0.01mg. Even our least precise balances have readabilities of 0.1g or better, while still accommodating capacities up to an impressive 22kg.

In contrast, the IHS 20a Crane Scale, with its 10,000kg capacity, has a readability of 2kg. While the Equinox balances are ideal for tasks requiring extremely fine measurements, such as crafting medicines, the IHS Crane Scale is suited for weighing large items like shipping crates, where a 2kg readability is perfectly adequate.

Balances offer a higher level of precision, making them much more sensitive than scales. Due to their fine readability, simply using an open pan, as with a bench scale, may not suffice. The more precise the balance, the more precautions are needed to avoid external factors affecting your measurements.

For instance, many of our Highland HCB Portable Precision Balances come with a removable draft shield. While you can use the balance without it in a typical environment with minimal disturbances, it’s advisable to use the shield if you’re outdoors in windy conditions or in a busy classroom.

Our Equinox, Solis, and Luna Precision Balances have built-in, non-removable draft shields to protect against everyday air drafts that could impact results. Additionally, the Equinox, Solis, and Luna Analytical Balances also feature draft shields and are best used with an AVT Anti-Vibration Table and an ABI-1 Ionizer to address concerns about small vibrations and static. Conversely, for busy warehouses and factories, our CKT Bench Checkweighing Scales are designed to handle active environments effectively.

Whether you choose balances or scales, we guarantee a high-quality weighing machine. If you’re uncertain which model from our extensive range best suits your needs, our team is here to assist you. Feel free to reach out for guidance.

When faced with counting a large number of parts and feeling overwhelmed, should you invest in a counting scale or a scale with a counting function? What sets them apart, and when should you opt for one over the other? This blog will explain what parts counting is, the differences between counting scales and scales with a counting function, and provide real-world scenarios to help you decide which is best for your needs.

What is Parts Counting?

Parts counting is a feature that allows your weighing scale to calculate the number of individual parts you place on it. To begin, the scale needs a small sample of parts—typically five or ten pieces—to determine the average weight of each part. With this average weight, you can add more parts, and the scale will accurately display the total count.

As you add more parts, the scale continuously recalculates and adjusts the average weight if necessary. This process, known as parts counting optimization, ensures the accuracy of the count. However, it’s important to avoid mixing different types of parts, as the scale won’t be able to distinguish between them and may provide an incorrect count.

Scales with a Counting Function vs. Counting Scales

Many weighing scales come with additional features like parts counting, which can be useful if you only need to count parts occasionally rather than on a daily basis.

For instance, our Aqua ABW-S is an IP68-rated waterproof scale designed for use in wet or dirty environments. It includes supplementary functions such as parts counting, checkweighing, and percentage counting. While it lacks the specialized features of a dedicated counting scale, the ABW-S’s built-in parts counting application is a valuable bonus. This allows you to handle occasional parts counting without needing a separate counting scale.

A counting scale is designed with features that enhance the efficiency and ease of parts counting. These scales are ideal for daily use if parts counting is a regular part of your work. Here are some features that can benefit you when using a counting scale:

Full Numeric Keypad

Many counting scales require you to specify a sample size when you start. For instance, with the ABW-S model, you’ll need to place either five, ten, or twenty screws on the pan so the scale can calculate the average weight. This feature is particularly helpful for those who are less familiar with parts counting, as it provides clear guidance throughout the process.

On the other hand, more advanced counting scales come with a full numeric keypad, allowing you to enter any sample size you prefer. This flexibility is ideal for regular users who are already accustomed to parts counting and know their preferred sample size. Additionally, if you already know the average weight, you can input it directly without having to weigh a sample first.

Specialized Buttons

A counting scale usually features dedicated buttons on the display that streamline various stages of the process. For instance, on the GC Counting Indicator, you can use the Sample button to input your sample size, and the Unit Weight button to enter the unit weight directly without needing a sample. In contrast, our Latitude Compact Bench Scale, which is a non-counting model, has a more straightforward button system. Here, the same button performs multiple functions, and you press it in sequence to access the parts counting feature.

Three Display Screens

Counting scales offer great convenience with their three distinct display screens. The first screen shows the total weight, the second displays the average weight per piece, and the third provides the total count of parts. This setup helps keep all the figures clear and organized, making record-keeping simpler. For regular weighing tasks, most scales only need a single screen, which can switch modes as needed.

PLU’s

Many counting scales, such as our Cruiser CCT Counting Scale, feature a PLU function, or “Product Look-Up.” This allows you to save the unit weight of frequently counted items, like ½-inch Phillips head screws, directly into the scale under a numeric code you assign. This way, you avoid the need to repeatedly gather samples and record unit weights. Accessing these PLUs is simple with a dedicated PLU button. Additionally, checkweighing and retail scales also offer PLUs, which enhances efficiency and speeds up the overall operation.

Auxiliary Platforms

Our Cruiser CDT Dual Parts Counting Scale can be paired with an auxiliary platform for added flexibility. While the CDT typically offers the readability and capacity you need, connecting an additional weighing platform via cable allows you to handle larger capacities without the need for a completely new scale.

If you frequently count large quantities or heavier items, our GFC Floor Counting Scales have you covered. They come in capacities ranging from 75kg to 300kg, ensuring you can handle even the most demanding tasks with ease.

How Counting Scales Are Used in Various Industries

What types of tasks are best suited for a counting scale?

Counting Scales in Manufacturing

There are several stages in the manufacturing process where a counting scale proves invaluable. For instance, when packing boxes or containers of items, such as tea bags, a counting scale can significantly streamline the task. Instead of manually counting each tea bag, which is time-consuming, you can use the scale to weigh a sample and then continue adding tea bags until you reach the desired quantity per box. This process is both efficient and consistent.

In assembly lines, where precision is crucial, a counting scale can help minimize human error. If a step involves adding four screws to each corner of an item, it’s essential to ensure you have the exact number of screws needed. By using a counting scale, you can verify that you have enough components to meet your daily production quota, preventing interruptions and saving valuable time.

Parts Counting for Stock Taking/Inventory

Similarly, when it’s time for year-end inventory counts, a counting scale can simplify the process immensely. Accurate inventory management is crucial for tracking your merchandise and parts, ensuring you know precisely what’s been used or sold, and allowing you to reorder as needed. There’s nothing worse than discovering you’re out of a popular item and facing potential shipment delays.

For instance, if you need to record the number of four-count bags of 5/16-inch zinc-plated steel square nuts in your hardware store, your counting scale can handle this efficiently. Instead of counting manually, let the scale do the work. Once the count is complete, you can save this information in the scale’s memory for easy reference during future inventories.

No matter if you’re weighing dogs, cats, or hamsters, getting precise results is crucial. In this blog, we’ll explore why using a vet scale to monitor your pet’s weight is so important and share three tips to ensure you get the most accurate measurements every time.

Understanding the Need to Weigh Your Pet

Just as people benefit from an annual physical, pets also need yearly check-ups with their veterinarian. During these visits, your vet will weigh your pet to assess their overall health and well-being. Weight is a crucial indicator for veterinarians, as it helps determine the appropriate dosage of medications—larger pets require more medicine than smaller ones.

If your pet is prone to health issues, having a veterinary scale at home or nearby can be very useful for more frequent weight monitoring.

While weight fluctuations can be normal, especially for certain animals, domestic pets shouldn’t experience drastic changes. For instance, bears hibernate and can lose 15 to 30% of their body weight over the winter. In contrast, if your pet loses or gains 10% or more of its body weight over a short period, it could signal a serious health problem. Regular monitoring helps catch these issues early.

3 Key Tips for Accurate Pet Weighing Results

For the most precise weighing results, ensure you’re using the appropriate scale, maintaining a detailed weight record, and preparing your pet correctly.

1. Select the Appropriate Scale

To ensure accurate measurements, select a weighing scale that matches your pet’s size and weight, and includes features that simplify the process.

The scale you choose should be appropriate for your pet’s dimensions. For example, horses require a platform scale, as they can’t use smaller types. Our largest option is the PT platform scale, available in sizes from 1000x1000mm to 1500x1500mm and with capacities ranging from 1000kg to 3000kg.

For large dog breeds, a smaller platform scale like our CPWplus L, which has a 600x900mm pan size and supports weights from 35kg to 300kg, might be ideal. For medium-sized dogs and those large breeds that can comfortably sit on the scale, a floor scale may be sufficient. For cats, bunnies, and small dogs, a bench scale such as our MTB, especially a medical-grade one, will work best. For hamsters, birds, and lizards, a compact balance is the perfect fit.

With the type of scale in mind, let’s explore additional features to help refine your choices.

What is Dynamic/Animal Weighing?

The weighing process becomes more efficient and less stressful for both you and your pet with a scale that features a dynamic/animal weighing function. This feature averages the weight of a moving animal over a specified time period.

Pets often don’t understand they need to stay still on the scale, which can lead to inaccurate readings if they move around. The dynamic/animal weighing function allows your pet to move more freely while still providing an accurate weight measurement.

Our GBK and GFK Bench and Floor Checkweighing Scales, as well as the AGB and AGF Bench and Floor Scales, all include dynamic/animal weighing for a smoother experience. Additionally, our PT Platforms, when used with the GK or AE 403 Indicators, also offer this feature.

What is the Display Hold Feature?

The Display Hold feature can greatly simplify the process of weighing animals, especially if they tend to jump off the scale quickly. This function records and displays the most stable weight measurement, allowing you to note down the result even if the animal has already stepped off the scale.

Our AGB and AGF Bench and Floor Scales, as well as the Latitude Compact Bench Scales and MTB Digital Scale, all offer this Display Hold feature. Additionally, the CPWplus series provides Display Hold along with a range of platform sizes, so you can select the option that best suits your needs.

With the right scale and useful features, you’ll be more likely to achieve accurate weighing results every time.

2. Maintain a Weight Record

Your pet’s weight might be accurately shown on the scale, but without a record for comparison, how meaningful is that accuracy?

While some weight changes are obvious, like when a horse’s ribs become more visible, others might be less noticeable due to thick fur, such as with Samoyed dogs or angora rabbits. That’s why it’s crucial to weigh your pet regularly—at least once a month—and keep a detailed record.

Generally, your pet’s weight should remain consistent, with only minor fluctuations expected. By establishing their normal, healthy weight, you create a baseline to monitor changes. If your pet’s weight shifts by 10% or more from this baseline, you’ll have substantial evidence to present to your veterinarian.

This record helps your vet determine if further tests are needed and decide on the appropriate treatment. Keeping a diligent weight record can assist in identifying potential health issues early, before they become more serious.

3. Properly Prepare Your Pet for Weighing

Even though features like display hold or dynamic/animal weighing can enhance accuracy, you can still achieve precise results with proper preparation.

Start by placing a non-slip mat or blanket on the scale if it has a stainless-steel pan. Stainless steel can feel cold and slippery, which might make your pet uneasy. Be sure to tare the weight of the blanket to avoid affecting your measurement. A mat or blanket offers a softer surface and helps your pet feel more comfortable. For added convenience, our MTB scale includes a secondary pan with a non-slip mat, ideal for pets that have trouble maintaining their footing.

Small pets like mice or hamsters can be weighed using our Core or Highland Compact Balances, which feature a removable, breathable top that accommodates their size. For larger, more active pets, using a Tupperware container or storage tub can help keep them contained during the weighing process.

If your pet is motivated by food, this can be an effective way to encourage them to stay still on the scale. You might need to place the food on the pan to keep them engaged while they are being weighed.

For pets that prefer being held, and if your scale has a high enough capacity, you can weigh yourself first, then hold your pet while standing on the scale. Subtract your weight to determine your pet’s weight.

The key is to keep your pet as still and calm as possible to ensure accurate results and avoid frustration. Make sure to record their weight in a secure location for future reference.

Common Reasons for Weight Fluctuations

If you notice significant or sudden weight gain or loss in your pet, it’s important to consult your veterinarian. However, several common factors can lead to substantial weight changes, many of which are easily preventable.

Overfeeding or Underfeeding

It’s important to thoroughly research the appropriate amount of food for your pet. For instance, a chihuahua might need between a quarter and a half cup of food per day, while a German Shepherd requires between three and five cups daily. An imbalance in calories and nutrition can lead to weight changes in your pet.

Additionally, the amount of exercise your pet gets impacts their food requirements. A chihuahua that enjoys daily hikes will need more food compared to one that spends most of its day resting.

Typically, dogs and cats should consume about 20 to 30 calories per 0.45kg of their body weight. Aim for the lower end (20 calories) if your pet is less active, and the higher end (30 calories) if they are very active. Horses generally need between 20 to 25 calories per 0.45kg of body weight, while rabbits require 25 to 30 calories per 0.45kg.

For example, a 29kg dog with moderate activity should consume around 1,611 calories daily (29 divided by 0.45, then multiplied by 25 calories). Your pet’s food packaging should provide a calorie guide to assist with this.

To monitor your pet’s food intake accurately, consider using a scale to measure their portion sizes.

Stress

If your pet’s daily routine or environment has changed, it can lead to stress. Just like people, pets often respond to stress by eating less, which can result in weight loss. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and can be addressed more effectively by establishing a new routine, offering adequate stimulation, and creating a calming environment.

Dental Pain

If your pet is experiencing dental problems, the discomfort from eating or chewing can lead to reduced food intake. Symptoms of dental pain may include a preference for softer foods, reluctance to have their mouth or snout touched, and bad breath. It’s important to consult a veterinarian to accurately diagnose the issue and provide appropriate treatment.

Pregnancy

This issue is specific to female pets. If your pet isn’t spayed and has been around an intact male, she may be pregnant.

Serious Medical Conditions

In some cases, diseases and parasites can cause significant weight loss or gain. Common conditions include hyperthyroidism, tapeworms, diabetes, cancer, and Cushing’s disease. If you suspect your pet might be suffering from a serious health issue, contact your veterinarian right away. Once a diagnosis is made and treatment is underway, continue monitoring your pet’s weight to track their recovery progress.

Please be aware that the information on our blog about pet weighing is for informational purposes only and should not be taken as professional veterinary advice. We encourage you to consult your veterinarian for personalised guidance on your pet’s health and well-being.

Congratulations on starting your small business! If you need to price some of your products by weight and are overwhelmed by the various trade-approved options, including price computing scales, you might be wondering which type is best for you. To help you decide, there are seven key factors to consider while shopping. Let’s explore them.

What’s a Trade-Approved Scale?

First and foremost, if you sell products by weight, you are legally required to use a trade-approved weighing scale for pricing. Trade approval is an additional certification that ensures your readings are accurate enough for commercial transactions. Using a non-trade-approved scale for pricing could result in significant fines, which can be a serious setback for a small business.

In some industries, such as the botanical sector, trade-approved scales are used not just for pricing, but to ensure accurate and reliable tracking of inventory, recording values in a trustworthy manner.

Trade approval is granted by various organizations depending on the region. In the United States, scales receive approval from the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP). In Canada, Measurement Canada is responsible for granting approval. Europe uses the European Commission (EC) for certification, while South Africa relies on the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). In Australia, the National Measurement Institute (NMI) provides the necessary approval.

What’s a Price Computing Scale?

It’s crucial to note that a price computing scale is a specialized type of trade-approved scale. While both price computing scales and standard legal-for-trade scales are certified for commercial use, price computing scales are specifically designed for retail environments. They not only display weight but also show the unit price and total cost for the customer. Additionally, these scales often come with extra features like extensive memory to streamline various processes. Our Swift Price Computing Retail Scale stands out as a unique option in our product lineup.

Which Option is Best for Your Small Business?

Every small business is unique, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. However, there are several key factors to consider when choosing the right scale for your new business.

1. Necessary Capacity

We offer eight models of the Swift Price Computing Retail Scale, available in both pillar and non-pillar designs. These scales have capacities ranging from 1.5kg to 30kg, making them suitable for most average-sized products. If your products are lighter, you might consider the Highland Approved Portable Precision Balance, which provides greater precision for smaller capacities and is ideal for high-quality work in the jewelry industry. Conversely, for products heavier than 30kg, our higher capacity options like the GFK-M or PTaM Platform Scales are excellent choices.

2. Your Environment

The Swift Price Computing Retail Scale is equipped with a stainless-steel pan for easy cleaning and features drip channels that direct spills away from the internal components. It’s an excellent choice if you don’t require extensive protection against water or dust.

For businesses that deal with frequent spills or require more robust cleaning capabilities—such as catering or restaurants—we recommend our Gladiator Approved Bench or Floor Scales. These scales are IP68 rated, offering full protection against water and dust, making them ideal for damp, dirty, wet, or humid environments.

3. Business Operations and Efficiency

For very small businesses with a limited product range, a trade-approved scale without price computing capabilities can be a practical choice due to its straightforward operation. Manual pricing will be less time-consuming with such a scale. For medium to larger small businesses, the Swift Price Computing Retail Scale offers greater efficiency.

The Swift features an extensive memory system with 161 Product Lookups (PLUs). This allows you to store unit prices for up to 161 products, either per 100g or per kilogram. This makes pricing quick and efficient: simply enter the product reference number, weigh the item, and the Swift will immediately calculate the total price for your customer.

While setting up the Swift may require some initial effort to input all your product information, it is well worth the investment if you manage a larger inventory. This setup will save you significant time by automating price calculations in the future. Once your product details are entered into the Swift, updating prices or adding new items is straightforward and hassle-free. The Swift will handle these changes automatically, so you won’t need to remember or manually adjust prices.

4. Multifunctionality

Some scales, like the Cruiser CKT-M Approved Checkweighing Scales, offer multifunctionality, making them ideal for businesses with a mix of products priced by weight and those sold at fixed prices.

For instance, if you sell individual fruits and vegetables by weight but offer boxes of produce at a set price, the checkweighing feature can help ensure that each carton, such as cartons of blueberries, is uniformly weighted.

Additionally, the CKT-M provides capabilities for parts-counting, check counting, accumulation, and percentage weighing, making it a versatile tool for various tasks beyond just price computing. In contrast, the Swift is primarily focused on price computing and standard weighing functions.

5. Customer Experience

All our trade-approved scales perform exceptionally well behind the scenes and in everyday operations. However, if your business involves direct customer interactions, the Swift offers unmatched benefits in enhancing the overall customer experience.

With displays on both the front and rear of the scale, the Swift ensures that the product’s weight, unit price, and total cost are clearly visible to both you and your customer. This transparency builds trust and allows for immediate feedback and communication. Any issues or discrepancies can be addressed and corrected before the transaction is finalized, ensuring a smooth and reliable checkout process.

Additionally, nobody enjoys waiting in line. Customers often have other tasks, appointments, or jobs to return to, and the pressure of manually calculating prices with a line of impatient people can be overwhelming. The Swift helps alleviate this stress by streamlining each transaction, allowing you to focus on building relationships with your customers rather than worrying about calculations.

6. Data and Reporting

Our trade-approved scales, including the Swift, need additional accessories like the ATP 2 Thermal Printer or the DU Data Collection Software to effectively handle data reporting. Without these tools, records will need to be maintained manually.

The ATP 2 Thermal Printer allows you to print weighing results directly, providing receipts for customers or keeping them for your own inventory and record-keeping. This reduces the risk of errors from manual entry, whether handwritten or typed. The Swift enhances this capability by including not only the weight but also the unit price and total price in the printout via the RS-232 interface, ensuring comprehensive and accurate documentation.

The DU software is a sophisticated tool that can connect up to eight scales simultaneously. It offers in-depth data analysis, allowing you to make informed business decisions and track sales efficiently.

7. Cost and Budget

If you’re just starting out or operate a smaller business, the Swift might appear to be more than you need in terms of both scope and cost. For a limited number of products priced by weight, a compact, bench, or floor scale that meets legal-for-trade requirements can be a cost-effective and practical choice.

However, if you’re planning to expand or already manage a large inventory of weight-based products, investing in the Swift can be highly beneficial. The initial expense will be offset by the time savings, increased efficiency, and fewer errors it provides over the long term.

With their proven precision, quick stabilization times, and long-lasting batteries, you can confidently choose any of our legal-for-trade or price computing scales for your small business. If you need further assistance in selecting the right model, feel free to contact us— we’re here to help.

Warehouses come in various types, but they all benefit from the efficiency a weighing scale brings to daily operations. In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of scales commonly used in warehouses and how they can enhance efficiency in managing everyday tasks.

Counting Scales

Counting scales, such as our Cruiser CCT, are specifically engineered to simplify frequent counting tasks. Counting scales feature three distinct displays, allowing you to view the total weight, individual piece weight, and counting result all at once.

Additionally, these scales can store information for frequently counted items, known as Product Lookups (PLUs). The CCT model, for instance, can store data for up to 140 different products, making it easy to recall information for items you handle regularly.

Whether the unit weight is known, unknown, or stored, the full numeric keypad with dedicated buttons streamlines each transaction. Buttons for Sample, Unit Weight, and PLU enable you to quickly and easily start at any point in the counting process.

What daily warehouse tasks can benefit from using counting scales?

Reviewing Incoming Shipments

When your warehouse receives an order delivery, it’s a good practice to count the contents before unpacking. This ensures you’re receiving exactly what you’ve paid for. The piece count from your scale should match your order precisely. Discrepancies could indicate a mix-up or error. With a counting scale, you can identify such issues within seconds, rather than spending hours on manual counting. This quick detection also makes it easier to address problems before goods are distributed or sold.

Inventory

Inventory season can be particularly stressful. Accurate counts are essential for maintaining operational efficiency, managing supplies, and making strategic decisions. Counting everything individually, especially small parts or items in boxes, can be time-consuming. As time goes on, counters may become fatigued, leading to slower progress and decreasing accuracy. Using a counting scale can dramatically reduce the time spent on inventory, minimize errors, enhance efficiency, and ensure your staff remains energized by the end of the task.

Order Picking

Customers expect to receive the exact quantity they’ve paid for, placing significant pressure on pickers. To ease this burden, counting scales are invaluable. They help ensure that each order contains the correct number of items, reducing errors and speeding up order fulfillment. By improving accuracy and efficiency, counting scales enhance customer satisfaction, bolster your company’s reputation, and encourage repeat business.

Pallet Truck and Platform Scales

Pallet truck scales are designed similarly to standard pallet trucks, featuring steel forks and rolling wheels. They come equipped with a weighing indicator that displays the weight of any pallet or item placed on the forks. In contrast, platform scales are large, high-capacity scales that generally remain in a fixed location on the warehouse floor. How are these scales used in daily operations?

Multitasking

Our pallet truck scales, the PTT and PTSplus, are ideal for scenarios where efficiency and multitasking are essential. Save time and effort by weighing and transporting a pallet simultaneously with the easy-rolling, non-marring polyurethane wheels. For accurate record-keeping, the PTT features the AE 503 label printing indicator. Once the weight stabilizes, you can print a fully customizable label to attach to the pallet. This label can include details such as weight, date, and a scannable barcode or QR code for additional information. Say goodbye to guessing, searching for paperwork, or reweighing!

Heavy Loads

Platform scales like the PT and PT Stainless Steel are perfect for weighing pallets and other heavy, non-palletized items. Their high capacities and durable construction ensure reliability and peace of mind for daily use. Additionally, these platform scales are compatible with almost any weighing indicator, allowing you to customize your setup for optimal performance.

Unusually Shaped Loads

Weighing unusually shaped objects can be challenging with a standard platform scale. Items such as large sheets of glass, oversized crates, or long pipes might extend beyond the edges of the scale, affecting weight distribution and leading to inaccuracies. Pallet beams, like the AELP, offer a solution by consisting of two connected platform scales. These beams can be spread apart to accommodate items of various sizes and shapes, ensuring accurate measurements.

Checkweighing Scales

Checkweighing scales, similar to counting scales, are designed to streamline frequent checkweighing tasks. For instance, our Cruiser CKT checkweighing scale features a single display that changes color to indicate whether weights are below (yellow), within (green), or above (red) the set limits.

Safe Loading & Shipping

Companies like Amazon establish weight limits for their deliveries—each box must weigh between 1 lb and 50 lbs, with the exception of individual items exceeding 50 lbs. This policy helps prevent injuries to those packing and delivering the boxes. Different containers may have their own weight restrictions; for instance, plastic shipping bags might hold less than a typical box.

By setting high and low weight limits, your workers can easily monitor compliance without needing to focus intently on each package. They simply need to watch for the display to turn red when the weight exceeds the set limits.

Knowing the weight of a package before shipping is crucial for ensuring safe truck loads. Overloading a delivery truck can reduce fuel efficiency, increase wear and tear, and potentially create dangerous situations. By weighing each item and packing them carefully, you can avoid these issues and save yourself trouble in the long run.

You know a weighing scale will benefit your warehouse, but choosing the right one is key. If you’re unsure which scale to select for your needs, contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Whether you’re involved in construction, materials testing, agriculture, or logistics, you need an industrial scale that is robust enough to deliver precise results in the toughest conditions. This blog will guide you through your options, helping you choose the ideal industrial scale for all your weighing needs.

Assessing Your Weighing Requirements

Capacity and Readability

The ideal industrial scale for your needs will largely depend on the weight of the items you’re weighing and the level of precision required. Keep in mind that a scale’s capacity and readability are inversely related—higher capacity often means less fine precision.

For instance, our IHS 20a Crane Scale, with a maximum capacity of 10,000 kg, has a readability of 2 kg, meaning it measures in 2 kg increments. In contrast, the Equinox Semi-Micro Balance, designed for laboratory use, can handle up to 62 grams with a readability of 0.01 mg.

To determine your capacity needs, consider the heaviest item you regularly weigh and choose a scale with a capacity slightly above that to avoid overloading, which could damage the scale. For example, while the IHS 20a can weigh a cruise ship propeller (10,000 kg), it wouldn’t provide the precision needed for weighing small inventory items like screws. Therefore, you may need multiple scales with different capacities to ensure you have the appropriate precision for various tasks.

Your Working Environment

The environment in which your scale operates is crucial, as it will influence the type and material of the scale you need. For example, in dusty or dirty conditions, a washdown or waterproof scale can simplify maintenance. Accumulated grime can impact weighing accuracy over time, so having a scale that can be easily hosed down for cleaning saves significant time.

If you sell items based on their weight—such as bags of concrete priced per pound—you are legally required to use a trade-approved scale. Trade approval is a certification that ensures your weighing results are accurate, so customers receive the exact amount they pay for, such as 90 kg of concrete instead of 85 kg. This certification also benefits your business by preventing losses from giving away more than what was purchased.

Fortunately, most types of scales—bench, floor, etc.—offer washdown or trade-approved versions. For those needing both features, consider the Gladiator Approved.

Types of Industrial Weighing Scales

Different scales are suited for different purposes. Let’s begin with the lowest capacity scales and progress to higher capacities, exploring the most suitable applications for each type.

Bench Scale

Bench scales are ideal when you need both durability and high precision. They are among the most versatile types of scales, compact enough to fit on a small bench and often equipped with a rechargeable battery for portability. We offer bench scales with capacities ranging from 2 kg to 200 kg, and readabilities from 0.05 g to 0.05 kg, ensuring you can find the perfect match for your needs. For even greater adaptability, our CDT Dual Counting Scales can connect to a higher-capacity base, combining precision for small counts with the durability required for larger ones.

The Aqua ABW-S Stainless Steel Bench Scale is a popular choice for industrial use, featuring an impressive IP68 rating. This scale is fully dust and waterproof, making it easy to clean. For specific applications, the Cruiser series includes the CKT Bench Checkweighing Scale and CCT Bench Counting Scale, designed to handle repetitive weighing tasks and product counting during inventory and stock control.

Floor Scale

Floor scales are designed with larger weighing pans to accommodate bigger and heavier items. While they are generally less portable than bench scales due to their size, many come equipped with features like rechargeable batteries or wheels for easier mobility. Our selection of floor scales ranges in capacity from 35 kg to 600 kg and offers readabilities from 0.01 kg to 0.05 kg, each featuring a durable stainless-steel weighing pan.

Despite their larger size, floor scales are highly specialized based on their indicators. For instance, the BKT and BCT models combine a stainless steel base with the AE 503 and AE 504 indicators for label printing. The Gladiator range includes the IP68-rated AE 403 indicator, now available with a trade-approved option for applications where pricing is based on weight.

Platform Scale

We offer a selection of heavy-duty platform scales designed for weighing large and bulky items. These scales are typically large, rectangular, or square, occupying significant floor space. They can easily handle oversized objects such as boxes, shipping crates, and pallets. Our platform scales come with capacities ranging from 35 kg to 4,500 kg.

Our PT Platforms are highly favored for industrial use due to their rugged durability and affordability. These platforms can be purchased individually or as part of a package with GK indicators. For added convenience, ramps are available for easy loading and unloading. For those who frequently use hand trucks, our PTM Drum Platforms come with built-in ramps to simplify the process.

Typically, a platform scale remains in its designated spot once set up, so ensure you have a clear area allocated for it. If you only occasionally need a platform scale and prefer not to dedicate permanent space for one, consider our AELP Pallet Beams. These beams can be adjusted to fit nearly any size package or pallet and can be easily stored when not in use.

Pallet Truck Scale

If you frequently weigh pallets, especially in shipping and receiving, and aim for maximum efficiency, a pallet truck scale such as our PTSplus or PTT is an excellent choice. The PTSplus comes with an AE 403 indicator designed for dustier environments, while the PTT includes a label printing indicator to help you monitor the weight of each pallet.

These scales enable you to weigh and transport simultaneously. Simply place a pallet on the scale, lift it to get the weight, and then move it to its destination. Our pallet truck scales support capacities of up to 2026 kg and offer readabilities of 0.5 kg. They perform best on smooth floors, as uneven or rugged outdoor surfaces may affect accuracy.

With a clear understanding of the various types of industrial scales and their applications, you can now select the right one with confidence. If you still have questions or need assistance, feel free to contact us—we’re here to help.
